Teaching and research area of work of the department
The scientific research area of the department’s work is research and understanding of the properties of metal materials in order to understand and improve the mechanical behavior of metal materials in working conditions, avoid malfunctions and provide a rational basis for technical design and efficiency, and the safety of the use of products made of metal materials, and based on these findings alloys could be designed with a predetermined combination of mechanical, physical or chemical properties.
Regardless of the great progress that has been made in the field of materials/metal materials and their design, today’s global technological challenges are the development of more sophisticated and specialized materials as well as consideration of the impact of material production on the environment.
The first of these challenges is to produce modern materials on the nanometer scale with the desired properties and functionality.
The issue of producing cheap and clean energy is the next challenge. The world is increasingly turning to renewable energy sources (solar energy, wind energy, tidal energy, waves, fuel cells). For the efficient and economical production of energy from such sources, materials that will be highly efficient in the conversion process and cheaper must be developed.
Transport of people and goods is a big consumer of energy, which means that it is necessary to reduce energy consumption and have a safe and fast means of transport. This again leads us to new high-strength construction materials of low density and high temperature capabilities for the manufacture of engine components.
Environmental quality depends on human willingness and ability to control air, water and land pollution, and pollution control techniques also require different materials.
The members of the department regularly monitor all technological achievements in this field and in accordance with the financial and technical possibilities at our disposal, we strive to contribute to new knowledge.
The teaching area of the department is defined by its scientific-research area as well as the curriculum of the Department of Materials Engineering – Metal Materials. The curriculum of the Department of Materials Engineering – metal materials major was conceived with the idea that a materials/metal materials engineer should be a link in a team of experts from different fields whose task is to design a new product or technology. That is, the materials/metals engineer is directly involved in solving problems such as product durability, costs, reliability, liability and environmental impact.
The focus of curriculum is on the analysis and assessment of metallic materials using different test methods (metallographic, mechanical, physical, chemical), evaluation of results and application of engineering tools (eg QFD and FMEA) for defining product specification and quality control, as well as selection and definition of parameters of technological processes of processing metal materials, such as heat treatment, welding, plastic processing in accordance with the properties of the material and its purpose.
In the past period, the department has implemented several courses in the field of heat treatment and metallography of metal materials for employees of various economic entities from Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Republic of Croatia.
